The old man sat on the plush rug with his back straight and legs crossed – things he struggled to do in life.
He watched, grinning, as his grandson opened the wooden toy chest. The little boy flung his stuffed blue elephant aside and didn’t stop until the entire trunk was empty.
Watching this chaos unfold was the best part of the old man’s day.
Just then he caught his grandson’s eye and gave him a thumbs up. To his astonishment, his grandson responded with a thumbs up of his own.
And for a moment, the distance between their worlds vanished.
