But she never imagined the final straw would come on a New Year’s Eve.
The night had been stressful. Getting home was worse: heavy snow made finding a taxi impossible. When one did finally appear, he was outmaneuvered by someone smarter, someone stronger, someone better.
He noticed her scowl immediately.
“Don’t worry, I’ll snag the next one,” he said without confidence.
She knew better. She knew they’d be walking home.
