Hangman’s Folly

Jeremiah was in big trouble. Huge.

He had botched today’s execution, his reputation now in tatters. Not that he had much of one to begin with. This should’ve been his first hanging.

He stood somberly next to the gallows, coiling the rope that had just failed him. Was the knot not tight enough? Was the noose too loose?

He had more than enough time to think about it. The suddenly free criminal had disappeared into the grasslands with Sheriff Bailey and two deputies in pursuit.

Even if they caught him, Jeremiah wondered if he’d get another chance.

Doubtful, he thought.
