A First Time for Everything

He’d been a football fan since forever, but it was his first time in the stands.

He’d been a physician for decades but had never been in an ambulance.

Yet today he achieved both.

Ironic, he thought.

The ambulance rumbled across the cold, hard field of old Tiger Stadium while he desperately performed CPR on the unconscious wide receiver. But no matter how hard he pressed or how vigorously he massaged the player’s chest, number 87 wouldn’t respond.

That sinking feeling started creeping in.

The kid – Hughes said the trainers – probably wanted his jersey retired someday.
