The Woodcutter’s Burden

The sound of an axe sinking into wood. Familiar and usually comforting. Not today though. Today I was mulling over an impossible decision: my wife or my children? That was my choice.

My wife reminded me of our dire situation: food was scarce, and we couldn’t afford to feed four mouths.

But her solution? To just abandon my beloved children in the woods? I couldn’t.

I took another full swing with my trusty axe and watched the hunk of wood splinter into two. My anger… my pent-up frustration was good for cutting wood.

Negotiating with my wife was another story.
