“You hear that?” my wife asked.
I did. I heard the whispers, but I wasn’t going to admit it.
She had wanted new construction, begged for it even. I want something older, something with character. And for the first time ever, I won.
But how was I supposed to know our new investment would come with permanent guests?
I felt her get out of bed. I watched her tiptoe across our cluttered bedroom, press her ear against the far wall.
“Yup,” she said with complete confidence. “Definitely haunted. I’m calling the realtor tomorrow.”
My victory – short and not very sweet.
