Intertwined

She sat on cold cement steps in a dark, dingy alley puffing on a stale cigarette. If there was a more depressing way to spend your fifteen, Tammy Varland couldn’t think of one.

It had already been a brutal shift. Her regulars were cranky, her line cooks were asleep and half her fellow waitresses were missing in action.

Tammy took another slow drag when she caught two stray cats nuzzling and purring loudly, their tails intertwined.

It struck her as strangely moving seeing these two skinny, mangy cats finding tenderness in such grim surroundings.

And maybe… it gave her hope.
