Grave Mistake

An aggressive move. Rushed even. But I knew she was family oriented; knew she’d admire the reverence I still had for my long departed grandmother.

So when I suggested a cemetery visit on our fourth date, I wasn’t surprised when she agreed. But as I placed the bouquet of flowers alongside Nana’s tombstone, I noticed she’d gone suspiciously quiet.

“Your grandmother’s maiden name is Magliano?” she finally whispered.

I nodded. She turned slightly pale.

“My mother’s maiden name is Magliano,” she then said.

Now it was my turn to go pale.

Maybe this cemetery visit wasn’t such a good idea.
