Silent Company

Five impeccable place settings, but only one dinner guest.

It used to be a vibrant dining room. Not anymore. Not since fate interfered and took them away from her. Cruelly. Unexpectedly.

She misses their laughing, their touch, the warmth that made this old house a home. Now she’s left with only memories. Only ghosts.

Emily sits at the head of the table. She grabs the ladle from the small ceramic pot and serves herself a steaming bowl of soup.

She watches the steam fade, and the soup get cold.

She waits quietly for dinner guests she knows will never arrive.
