The doorbell rang. Right on time.
I paused the video game and hurried over to the front door.
“Seriously!?!” my girlfriend asked, ripping off her headphones. “In the middle of a raid!?!”
Her eyes were wide; her shoulders shrugged. I had never seen her like this before, this upset. Usually game night was a more relaxed affair.
“But the food’s here,” I answered, my voice barely above a whisper.
This was no ordinary delivery either. Plan was to spread out the feast, pull out the engagement ring and then celebrate.
“Food can wait,” she said. “Let’s get back to it.”
