Hallway Robbery

“Get back here!” the librarian shrieked.

But little Nolan O’Brien was already out the door, sprinting down the hallway, the most wanted picture book in the school tucked under his jacket.

He didn’t even want the thing. Reading was stupid. But he knew every other fourth grader at Polk Elementary did. And that made the dare worth it.

Until he barreled around the corner and found the exit blocked.

“Cool them jets,” the janitor growled.

Nolan slid to a stop, sneakers squeaking against the freshly waxed floor.

The janitor grinned, raising his mop like a broadsword.

“Five bucks to pass.”
