Saturday Night Swindle

“Be right back,” she said with a wink. “Meantime, keep it rocking.”

I grinned as my crush tiptoed from the second-floor nursery. I put my hand on the cradle and started counting the seconds until she returned.

Then I heard a sports car outside, engine thundering. I peeked out and saw her skip across the driveway, purse in hand. Watched as she slid into the front seat and pecked the driver’s cheek.

My mouth dropped as the car then spun gravel before disappearing into the distance.

I went back to the sleeping baby.

“She’ll be right back,” I told myself.
