The View from Behind

I first spot them ambling down the aisle, a pair of smiling octogenarians. With little difficulty, they settle into the black leather recliners in front of me.

I catch them fiddling with the controls – up, down, up, down – their snickers growing louder.

Then, the popcorn fight. One kernel at him, another stray kernel over at her before the two agree to a cease fire.

The house lights lower. I watch as their shoulders come together, their arms meet, palms pressed together, fingers intertwined.

I see a lovely old couple having a charming night out.

And I am jealous as hell.
